e-Shram Card Benefits Nobody Talks About

By Ramesh Yadav · 29 May 2026 · 6 min read

Our building's security guard showed me his e-Shram card one day and asked, bhaiya, what is this even for? He had registered because someone told him to, but had no idea what it gave him. I realised this is the story for most unorganised workers. So let me lay out what the card quietly does.

The accident insurance most forget

The biggest one people miss: registration comes with accidental insurance cover. For a daily-wage worker with no other safety net, that is not a small thing. Many do not even know it exists until something happens and it is too late to claim.

A single identity that opens doors

The Universal Account Number on the card is meant to be your single identity as a worker across schemes. Over time it is how the government routes various welfare benefits to unorganised workers. The point is to be in the system so benefits can actually reach you.

  • Accidental insurance cover for registered workers
  • A Universal Account Number recognised across states
  • A gateway to social-security benefits as they roll out
  • Free registration — no fee, takes minutes

My honest take

The card is only useful if you know what it carries and keep your details updated. I told our guard to make sure his mobile number and bank account on the card were current, because a benefit that cannot reach your account is useless. If you or someone working for you has the card, spend five minutes checking those details are right.
