How to Apply for a Driving Licence Online in India

By Karthik Subramanian · 16 June 2026 · 8 min read

Getting a driving licence used to mean a middleman, a fistful of cash, and a vague promise that everything would be taken care of. When I finally got mine recently, I did the whole thing myself through the Parivahan Sarathi portal, and it was genuinely doable without any agent. Here is the full journey, from the learner's licence to the permanent one.

Start with the learner's licence

You cannot jump straight to a permanent licence. First you apply for a learner's licence on the Parivahan Sarathi portal. You fill the application, upload documents, pay the fee, and book a slot for a simple online test on traffic rules and signs.

Do not treat that test casually — study the road signs beforehand. It is not hard, but people fail it by assuming it needs no preparation. I spent an evening with the signs and cleared it comfortably.

Documents you will need

Keep these scanned and ready.

  • Aadhaar card or other identity proof
  • Age proof
  • Address proof
  • Passport-size photographs and signature

Then the permanent licence

After holding the learner's licence for the mandatory waiting period (usually about a month), you apply for the permanent licence and book a driving test slot at the RTO. On test day you actually drive, so practise properly during that month rather than cramming at the end.

I practised on a quiet road with a friend who drives well, and that made the test far less nerve-racking. The examiner mainly wants to see that you are safe, controlled and aware — not a stunt driver.

The test and after

Pass the driving test and the permanent licence is issued and posted to you, with a digital copy usually available sooner. If you fail, you can re-book and try again, so it is not the end of the world — but it is a wasted trip, so go prepared.

One tip: reach the RTO early on test day and carry your learner's licence and originals. Things move faster when your paperwork is in order.

My honest take

You genuinely do not need an agent anymore. The portal walks you through each step, and paying a tout mostly just adds cost while skipping the learning you actually want before you drive on real roads.

Do it yourself, take the learner's test and the driving practice seriously, and you will end up not just with a licence but with the confidence that you earned it properly. That matters every time you get behind the wheel.
